Why it works for children & what’s in it

Times are estimates for the base recipe. Larger quantities may take longer.

Step by step

Here’s how.

Keep it simple today.

Tinned tomatoes and beans save preparation. It is fine to leave out the garlic today; the meatballs still have plenty of flavour.

What you can prepare ahead

Cook the dish fully the day before. Cool promptly and refrigerate within 2 hours at 5 °C or below. Reheat thoroughly once the next day.

If there is room for it today

Helping is lovely. Watching is fine too.

Your child can rinse the beans in a sieve and help set the table. Raw mince and the hot pan are jobs for adults.

It does not have to be a family cooking project. It is fine to do it yourself today.

Why it works for children.

Small soft pieces of meat and mild sauce make trying the meal manageable. Cut round meatballs into pieces before serving to younger children.

About this nutrient

These notes refer to the ingredients in the base recipe. The amount on the plate depends on preparation, portion size and swaps. Variety across the week makes the difference.

Make it yours.

Chicken mince works too; follow the same hygiene and cooking guidance.

Feeling a little unsure?

Offer a cut-up meatball with a little sauce. Beans can stay at the side or be squashed into the sauce.

Keeping leftovers

Cool untouched leftovers promptly in shallow containers, then cover and refrigerate at 5 °C or below within 2 hours. Eat within 24 hours. Reheat only once, reaching at least 70 °C throughout for 2 minutes.

For younger eaters

Designed for family meals from age 3, not as a weaning recipe. Always adapt shape and texture to your child’s abilities. Cook hard pieces until soft or grate finely; cut up small round foods. Stay with your child while they eat. For known allergies, check ingredients and substitutions individually.
