Folate

A B vitamin involved in cell division and blood formation.

Vitamin B9 · Folic acid · Reviewed: 13 October 2026

What does it do?

Folate helps make genetic material and supports cell division. The term covers different forms of the vitamin. Folic acid is commonly used in fortified foods and supplements; the terms are not interchangeable in every quantity statement.

Where can you find it?

Pulses, green leafy vegetables and other vegetables provide folate. Variety helps include different food sources.

Make it work in everyday life

A lentil dish, peas with potatoes or some spinach in a familiar filling are possible starting points. There is no need to try everything in the same week. Pick a preparation that fits ordinary family life. Children who prefer vegetables separately can have them that way too. Nutrient knowledge should make choosing easier, not turn every meal into an assignment.

Is folic acid only important during pregnancy?

No, folate has roles throughout life. However, specific folic acid advice around pregnancy is not a dosing instruction for children.

Try it in the family kitchen
