Vitamin B12

A vitamin involved in nerves, blood formation and cellular processes.

Cobalamin · Reviewed: 13 October 2026

What does it do?

Vitamin B12 is needed for normal nervous-system function and red blood cell formation, among other roles. Status depends on both intake and absorption.

Where can you find it?

Reliable natural sources are animal foods such as fish, meat, eggs and dairy. Unfortified plant foods are not dependable B12 sources. Vegan diets require reliable supplementation.

Make it work in everyday life

When changing a diet, note which sources are actually eaten. “Vegetarian” does not tell you how often eggs or dairy appear. A similar-looking replacement does not automatically have their composition. Excluding several food groups is a good moment to review the plan with a qualified professional. Take existing supplements and product labels, rather than just their names, to the discussion.

Can algae or fermented foods be relied on?

They are not a dependable basis for B12 supply. Vegan children in particular need a professionally planned approach.
