Vitamin D

Important for calcium balance, with a special role for production in the skin.

Fat-soluble vitamin · Reviewed: 13 October 2026

What does it do?

Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and bone metabolism. The body can produce it in skin exposed to sunlight. Season and other factors affect this route; food is only one part of the picture.

Where can you find it?

Oily fish provides vitamin D. Smaller amounts occur in some other foods. Fortified products do not all contain the same amount.

Make it work in everyday life

A fish dish may fit your family’s meals, but it cannot reveal how much vitamin D a child has available overall. Do not use general food information in place of age-specific preventive advice. If drops or other supplements are already being used, take the exact products to a consultation. This helps avoid combining several sources unintentionally.

Can more sunshine replace vitamin D supplements?

There is no universal number of sunlight minutes for every child. Skin protection remains important. Swiss FSVO guidance recommends vitamin D supplementation until the third birthday; other circumstances need individual assessment.
