Calcium

A mineral for bones, teeth and other functions in the body.

Mineral · Reviewed: 13 October 2026

What does it do?

Calcium is part of bones and teeth and is also needed by muscles and nerves. Vitamin D supports its absorption. The two nutrients have different roles and are not interchangeable.

Where can you find it?

Dairy, some fortified alternatives and certain vegetables can contribute calcium. Amounts in plant drinks and tofu depend on the product; check the label.

Make it work in everyday life

Notice which calcium-containing foods appear in your ordinary week. Plain yoghurt might fit breakfast, or a quark dip could go with potatoes. If dairy is excluded, choose replacements deliberately rather than judging by colour or taste alone. Compare similar products. When several food groups are excluded at once, individual advice is more useful than building a diet around separate marketing claims.

Is every plant drink a substitute for milk?

No. Calcium fortification and protein content vary. Using a drink in the same bowl of cereal does not give it the same nutritional composition.
