Why it works for children & what’s in it

Times are estimates for the base recipe. Larger quantities may take longer.

Step by step

Here’s how.

0 / 5
An easier way today.

Use cooked chickpeas and canned tomatoes. Cook rice while the stew simmers.

What you can prepare ahead

Make the stew the day before and chill promptly. Preferably cook rice fresh.

Got interrupted? Tick off each step as you finish, so you can find your place again here.

When there is room for it today

Helping is welcome. Watching is too.

Rinse chickpeas and measure rice. An adult mixes hot sauce and peanut butter.

For your family table

Adapt for younger eaters.

Soft cubes and a smooth, diluted sauce. No whole nuts, nut pieces or thick blobs of nut butter; squash chickpeas for young children. Intended for family meals with children aged 3 and over, not as a weaning recipe. Adapt shape, texture and quantity; supervise eating.

These notes refer to the ingredients in the base recipe. The amount on the plate depends on preparation, portion size and swaps. Variety across the week makes the difference.

Make it work for you.

For a peanut-free variation, use 100 ml coconut milk instead of peanut butter and reduce water by 100 ml. Check ingredients and cross-contact separately for allergies; flavour and nutrient composition change.

Taking it slowly today?

Keep rice separate and offer only a little stew alongside at first, with no pressure to taste.

Keeping it safely

Cool untouched stew promptly in shallow containers and refrigerate at 5°C or below within 2 hours; eat within 24 hours. Cool rice especially quickly, ideally within one hour, and also use within 24 hours. Reheat once to at least 70°C throughout for 2 minutes.
