Protein

A building material for the body, supplied by both plant and animal foods.

Amino acids · Reviewed: 13 October 2026

What does it do?

Protein is made of amino acids. The body uses them to build and maintain tissue and to make enzymes, among other functions. Some amino acids must come from food. Growth needs adequate overall nutrition; extra protein alone does not make a child stronger.

Where can you find it?

Pulses, tofu, eggs, dairy, fish and meat can provide protein. Grains contribute too. Different sources complement one another across the day.

Make it work in everyday life

Start with a familiar meal: tofu or egg could accompany rice and vegetables, or bean spread could go on bread. There is no need to force a new favourite. Offer components separately if your child prefers that to a mixed dish. A small selection served regularly is more useful than a long list of ideas that never reach the table.

Do active children need protein shakes?

Playing and ordinary recreational sport do not create a blanket need for protein products. A dietitian can help with specific questions about whether a child’s diet meets their needs.
