What does it do?
Carbohydrates supply energy. They include sugars and starch. A food is not defined by its carbohydrate content alone: fibre, other nutrients and preparation also matter.
Where can you find it?
Potatoes, rice, bread, pasta and oats are familiar starchy foods. Wholegrain versions often provide more fibre than their refined equivalents.
Make it work in everyday life
Keep a familiar starchy base and add vegetables and a suitable protein food. When trying wholegrains, begin with a small mixture or finely milled wholemeal bread. Every white roll need not be replaced. Look for options your family enjoys regularly and can buy and prepare without adding stress to the day.
Are carbohydrates the same as sweets?
No. Potatoes and oats provide a different mix of accompanying nutrients from a sweet drink. A shared nutrient category tells you little about a whole food.
