Why it works for children & what’s in it

Times are estimates for the base recipe. Larger quantities may take longer.

Step by step

Here’s how.

0 / 5
An easier way today.

Buy deboned fillets but still check them yourself. Vegetables can cook on one tray; use two trays if crowded and check cooking time.

What you can prepare ahead

Cut potatoes and fennel shortly before cooking. Keep defrosted fish refrigerated according to the packet and cook on the day it thaws. Dispose of thawing liquid separately.

When there is room for it today

Helping is welcome. Watching is too.

Your child can place potato pieces in the cold dish. Adults check the fish and handle the knife, thermometer and hot tray.

For your family table

Adapt for younger eaters.

Check for bones before and after cooking, even with fillets sold as boneless. Flake fish finely, mash potatoes if needed and cut fennel into suitable small pieces.

Nutrient knowledge

Trout provides protein and omega-3 fats. Potatoes add carbohydrates, while fennel brings vegetable variety. Amounts depend on the fish and portion.

These notes refer to the ingredients in the base recipe. The amount on the plate depends on preparation, portion size and swaps. Variety across the week makes the difference.

Make it work for you.

Carefully checked salmon fillets also work; allow for their thickness and cooking time. If fennel is unfamiliar, replace some with thin carrot pieces and check they are tender.

Taking it slowly today?

Offer a small piece of fennel next to familiar potatoes. Soft fish flakes can stay separate; there is no need to hide anything.

Keeping it safely

Prepare fish fresh where possible. Promptly pack untouched leftovers in shallow containers, refrigerate at 5°C or below and use within 24 hours. Reheat thoroughly throughout; follow packet storage and use-by instructions.

For younger eaters

Check for bones before and after cooking, even with fillets sold as boneless. Flake fish finely, mash potatoes if needed and cut fennel into suitable small pieces.
